i can see that linkedin has advantages in professional networking.
as with many web applications, one has to have a reason for using the site. I'm not sure it's a necessity to be signed up with linkedin to stay current with industry news, that may vary between different business environments.
by the way, as of 23rd december, barack obama needs to update his linkedin profile, it only has him listed as a US senator.

23 things plus 5: VuFind
time to do another of the library 23 things plus 5 tasks...
VuFind works well the National Library of Australia catalogue. i appreciate the links to the online visual material and the integration of various apects of a library page. (catalogue, electronic journals etc). i guess that it is indicative of the way the internet has been changing the way that i think about a library catalogue. NLA, especially through it's picture asutralia site, has meant that i have a higher expectation of visual material being freely available over the internet. sometimes i find it frustrating that all i have is the catalogue record for something, even though it's more than i may have had in the past.
the following site from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities is a case in point. 'The Consortium of MnPALS Libraries is composed of all of the libraries of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, as well as private college and university libraries, state government libraries, public libraries, school libraries and special libraries.' (http://www.mnpals.org/sections/MnPALS_Consortium.html) it's remarkable that i can access all records for all the material from a broad range of libraries, but as a visual person, i do like images.

installation in process

a couple of in process shots of my piece in the honours exhibition. the gallery space is quite square and has a pillar in the middle. it's been interesting observing how people have been looking at the exhibition. some people seem to altogether miss that i've used the pillar. they start at one side or the other and walk around the outside, looking at the work.

two details

two details from my in-situ wall piece, 'something shimmering and white'. the paint exposes the wall and shows up all the work that has gone before, all the repairs from nails and plastering (sometimes badly done). the purple/mauve is a resistance paint, on the gold background it comes up in this shade, on a black background it is violet. the title is a line out of 'under the milky way' by the church.
the opening went well, it was a great evening.

honours show

here's an poster for my honour's show. it opens on wednesday. i finished the work today. it's in situ, drawn and painted on the wall. it should be a good show. all four of us work in abstraction, and a more lyrical style of abstraction, yet we are completely different. (not that surprising really, just interesting stuff to talk about when in the studio.) now just to finish off a couple of things for assessment tomorrow...

23 things +5 part 2 Kartoo
I've spent a little bit of time recently playing with Kartoo. for a visual person, it's good to have that sort of mind map structure.
i tried a number of searches. one search was for Daniel Buren, the artist from belgium. his official page didn't show up on the fist map, but on the second. i didn't realise there were other 'maps' for a few minutes. only when i entered daniel buren official as the search term, did his site appear on the first map. pages that did appear were wikipedia and the guggenheim museum, (buren had a significant show there in 2005, read all about it here.)
out of interest, i did a comparison, using other search engines. here's a selection of results.

23 things plus 5 - voyage rss feeds
23 things continues on!
while it's the 4th thing on the list of 5, i looked at voyage first. i added a feed and deleted a number of the feeds i didn't want. however i think i'll be sticking with the google feed reader. the voyage design looks nice and slick and has a spacey starfield screensaver/star wars opening credits feel to it, but one needs a decent mouse and it's frustrating having to drag the mouse all over the screen in order to be able to get to click on a desired link. a case of style over substance.

gallery podcasting
here's a couple of links to some online and downloadable content offered by galleries. some galleries have set up their podcasting with itunes pages. moma has an interesting series of lectures available. there's an interview with bill viola on the gallery of nsw page i'm interested in having a look at. i'm sure there's more out there, i've just been looking at some of the 'major' sites so far.

gestural lines exhibition part 3
Here's an image of most of the left wall of the exhibition. (left as entering gallery) when taking the exhibition down, i peeled most of the gold paint on the right block off the wall. I've begun using the peel in other works. At the moment i have a few smaller works on paper. The aim at the moment is to include these in a package with some photos of the exhibition and some selected documentation on CD. This all comes in a box. I'll make about ten and edition them. i would like to sell them, but haven't decided on a price yet. Some sections of the peel are quite large. i think i'd like to do some larger works on paper or canvases with them.

gestural lines exhibition part 2

A couple more images from the show. one of the end wall piece before completion. more red shows through around the edge. the other is a detail of the piece on the right hand wall. it's in red pencil. i have mentioned in other posts that the pencil pieces are exceptionally difficult to photograph well. the camera doesn't pick up the detail when trying to photograph the whole wall. it shows just how much is experiential about the piece. even being in the gallery space it was hard to see the whole work at once. the eye travels through the work. each passage is seen as the eye of the viewer moves through the work. the photos form a new work, and only partially reproduce the work in the gallery.

marking time part 2

'marking time', acrylic and paint pen on wall. november, 2008
well, it took long enough to get around to it, but I've started looking at the photos I took of last year's graduate show. one image of the pillar is included. i'm going to be documenting my current exhibition on thursday. i booked the camera, tripod and lights. i've also booked a video camera, i'm going to try taking a moving image following the lines drawn on the wall. so images of the work will appear soon.
the opening of the exhibition went very well and it was great to see so many family, friends and collegues. i'm very happy and satisfied with the result. utterly exhausting, but well worth the effort.

marking time part 1 progress

This is a blurry image, but it shows the work in progress from last year's grad show and it illustrates the process i have been using. my show next week will utilse the same process. more to follow. i have to change the image files from nef to something that i can actually use. nef files are good, but i need to use a computer that has the relevant software on it to handle them.

first site exhibition - gestural lines

RMIT Union Arts Presents
Gestural Lines
Jo Gillespie
Jo Gillespie’s work uses the medium and language of abstract expressionism in a contemporary art context.
She explores process, utilizing the language of abstract expressionism, especially the gesture, building work in defined steps, creating a tension between the chance mark and deliberate intention.
Throughout these processes reference is made to landscape, especially aspects of mapping.

23rd task!
a few thoughts...
here i am on the last day possible to complete 23 things, doing my last task. that in itself says something about the experience really. i started off early on aiming to keep up with the tasks as they rolled out, but dropped behind by week 5. some things i had already incorporated in how i use the internet and various web 2.0 features. i had an igoogle page set up, i think google maps is fascinating. other tasks added to that .
i'm glad i've done the tasks. i feel i could have been more articulate.
i did choose to put my name to my blog, but sometimes i wonder whether i fully expressed my views or withheld opinion. i think personal privacy in relation to some of the social function of web 2.0, especially facebook, leaves me feeling a bit awkward. Having said that though, there are new communication possibilities. it's another way in which we see society and the way we relate change and yet somehow remain the same. (what a cliche to end on!)
postscript.
i've enjoyed looking at people's blogs. it's been fascinating to see the variety of interests swinburne library people have. japanese film and culture and doctor who have been highlights.
i will probably be keeping on with this blog, but it will concentrate on the art side of my existence from now on. stay tuned. i'm having an exhibition in April. details soon.

second life? what about my first life!
i can see how second life is useful for a number of our students: design, game design, programmers, new avenues of sociological and psychological research!
visually and creatively it's quite extraordinary.
at the moment, i think second life is another door to the information and services we provide, not an end in itself.
I've been having a read through some other blogs and have noticed that a number of opinions expressed regarding library 2.0 and second life are ones that I go a long way to agreeing with.
libodessey has excellent posts on library 2.0 and second life.

library 2.0
some of the topic of reading about library 2.0 also lead me to thinking about the 23rd task.
for me, library 2.0 seems to be about 2-3 things. development, access and communication.
development and library2.0 refers to the accommodation and incorporation of new technologies, particularly some of the web based applications we've been looking at, into the everyday work practices of libraries. Of course there are issues stemming from that, but libraries have changed as technology has changed...(mostly. the issue of $$$ does come into things). it's what societies have done too. (generally) societies, technology and cultures adapt and change. for the library, it's another avenue to information. this then leads to talking about communication and access.
library 2.0 creates new avenues for people to access information and it's a way libraries can communicate with communicate. library staff with other library staff, the library with staff and students, and in a format that the new students increasingly use and think of as a normal way of communicating.
i was going to say maybe it's not about development, but about change. maybe it's less about the development of the technology, but about how we deal with the change.

google booksearch
google booksearch. here are a few quick comments...
probably useful for acquisitions.
it also may be useful to see a preview of a book before going off to try and find it in a library.
It does seem to be quite broad. i was wondering whether it would have greater application to a public library, but looking through it, there are may applications
one feature that is interesting is the "popular passages" which leads one on to looking at books that have a similar them to that of that text of the passage. Another way of building a bibliography if one is studying. needs to be used in conjunction with the catalogue and libraries australia.

del.isio.us de.ligh.tf.ul de.love.ly
I've looked at del.isio.us (or however it will be punctuated in future).
It's useful in that I am able to 'take' my bookmarks or favourites with me. i can log in an use it at any time. i also like the whole cloud tag thing.
what mystifies me on occasion is the social aspect of it: 'this site was bookmarked by 78 people' etc. i'm not sure whether i want to know that or not. which 78 people were they, if i look at their bookmarks, it's no guaranteed that i'll like any of the sites they go to. it's a matter of my taste and opinion. some people i'll agree with and with others, i won't. the same thing happens if i look on amazon.com where they have the people who bought this book also bought this other book... sometimes the other book turns out to be better and other times, it's a real fizzer. same goes with library thing too.
sometimes it all seems too public for me. (though here i am stating my opinion, as i am on the whole blog!)
del.isio.us turns into another way of browsing the internet.

my space and facebook
Okay, I've had a look at my space and facebook. i put swinburne into facbook and found there were 150 groups with the word swinburne in there somewhere, ranging from astrophysics and design, to various types of past students just keeping in touch, (these seem to be dominated by those who seemed to have spent most of their time at the pub.) actually some of the current groups seem to be dominated by people who spend most of their time at the pub. this could be an exaggeration - but not by much! there are also some non-swinburne uni groups too.
I have had a bit of a look around my space, mostly at sites for music. it's a nice way of getting a sample of music. Here's a my space page for my friend Lizanne's band lady grey
They have a residency at the Wesley Anne on high st, northcote on Wednesday nights in February. last night is on the 27th!!!
here are more pages for the dirty three, jeff lang and mia dyson
ps i have done my igoogle page.
