i can see that linkedin has advantages in professional networking.

as with many web applications, one has to have a reason for using the site. I'm not sure it's a necessity to be signed up with linkedin to stay current with industry news, that may vary between different business environments.

by the way, as of 23rd december, barack obama needs to update his linkedin profile, it only has him listed as a US senator.
