23 things plus five - semantic web

i've been reading a bit about the semantic web and don't really know what to say about it. I like what Mishellaneous says about it on 'sea of memes'

"From my limited reading on the subject, the Semantic Web is all about computers being able to search between different types and genres of data and bring these searches together to create much more useful results and applications for everyday use on many levels."
the clip at the foot of the post is also well placed!

regardless of any technical difficulties in building a semantic web, it feels like there are some philosophical problems. words are loaded with different meanings for different people. the cultural assignations to a word or concept are diverse and complex. it feels like the semantic web could further compound a more homogonised display of information. having said that, i do acknowledge that there is a wide range of opinions and information out there. i just think that all the most 'popular' sites tend to float to the top of a web search and that the semantic web probably won't be any different.
